Racing Motivation with a Dash of Fun

As I have gotten older, I have been paying more attention to my health.  I have never been an active person other than walking or participating in the marching band in high school.  Well in 2007, that changed.  I participated in my first Disney 1/2 Marathon or in Disney language “The Donald.”  I have never even thought about walking no less running 13.1 miles but what a wonderful way to start by doing it at Walt Disney World. I talked my sister, who had participated in the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, into tackling this journey with me.  I must say it was a great experience to walk/run through the Magic Kingdom and Epcot.  Ok, I will be honest; I did more running when I saw a photographer.  You cannot have too many action shots.  There was music provided by live DJs, choirs, and what appeared to be high school bands.  In the parks were characters waiting for you to stop and take pictures with them.  When I crossed the finish line, I was so happy I thought I was going to cry.  My parents were present to see my sister and I accomplish such a task.  I was also happy because my legs did not fail me on the course.  My legs did hurt like crazy later on in the day and the next day, but walking around with the medal around my neck was worth it.

I have participated in four Disney races since then:

2007 The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 13K

2008 1/2 Disney Marathon

2008 Inaugural Expedition Everest Challenge

2010 Inaugural Wine & Dine Half Marathon Relay w/my sister

As I reported in an earlier post, I plan on participating in the 2012 Wine & Dine Half Marathon next fall.  I am also thinking about the  2012 Expedition Everest Challenge that will be held in May.  Registration has already opened for this race.  Follow this link   Registration

On December 21, runDisney announced The Twilight Tower of Terror 10-Miler weekend will be held September 28-28, 2012.  This race will be  a night race and will have an after race party until 3am.  I am really thinking about participating in this.  I am trying to talk my sister into registering for it.  Registration opens February 14, 2012. You can check here for updates and details Information     Due to this race being held late September, the 2012 Disney Wine  & Dine Half Marathon Weekend will be November 9-10, 2012.

When I tell people that I have participated in races and obtained medals, I will state I am not a top athlete or a sports enthusiast.  For me, participating in an event is fun and healthy because it forces me to work out and eat right.  I am always motivating others to participate.  The  name of the game is to have fun and just get out there on the course.  It is an experience doing the race alone or with a group.  I may not win, but I crossed the finish line.

Have you ever participated in a Disney Endurance Event? If so, which one and what motivated you to participate?

Disney 2012 New Year’s Resolutions

This is the time of year where I make resolutions. Some past ones have been exercising, saving money, and sticking to a budget.  Now some of those I did and others faded away by March.  Now it is time to develop new resolutions to assist in making me a better person in 2012.  I thought I would be more creative with the 2012 resolutions by putting a spin on them. I have decided to have Disney resolutions.

The following are my 2012 Disney resolutions:

  • Train and participate in the 2012 Wine & Dine ½ marathon
  • Participate in Animal Kingdom’s Wild Africa Trek
  • Attend Epcot’s 30th Anniversary
  • Stay in a new Disney resort

Well those are my 2012 Disney Resolutions.  What are some of yours?

Mean Muggin’ Monday

I wanted to start showcasing my collections of Disney mugs.   What better way to start off the work week, than with a cup of coffee in a Disney mug.

Disney Love

Some people will never understand why I love Disney.  I have learned to accept that along with the remarks that go with it. Yes, being a Disney lover I hear “You going there again?” or “Why do you keep going back?”  It use to baffle me that others would have so many comments or opinions on where I wanted to invest my time.  Do those that go to the beach or Las Vegas get the same comments?  I doubt that.

Disney World does mean more to me than riding Splash Mountain or taking a picture with a character.  Maybe that is what others do not understand.  I have developed friendships, strong family-ties with a handful of people that I would not trade.  During my last trip, 12/1-4, I had the opportunity to do a girls’ trip with Sara M. (@DisneySara), who is the author of the blog Mickens Mouse  (mickensmouse.blogspot.com).  This was the first trip we had a chance to really talk, laugh, and shop.  We refer to shopping as “enhancing”.  A term used by another close friend and shopping pal, Toni F. (@Dopey926).  We spent more times in stores than on rides.  We danced down Main Street USA at Magic Kingdom and enjoyed eating sweets while taking in The Osborne Spectacle of Dancing Lights at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  Another friend Phil A. (@PAdams626) drove down for a day with his son to spend time with the girls at Epcot and Magic Kingdom.

Last year my sister and I took our first sisters’ trp. We went during the first weekend of Epcot’s Food and Wine Festival and learn about Epic October.  Growing up we were not as close due to the five year age difference.  We had different friends and participated in different activities.  Fast forward to adulthood and we are running around four parks trying new sweets and collecting pins. She refuses to collect
Vinylmations, but as I recall she purchased one.  We participated in the 2010 Wine & Dine ½ Marathon Relay. We earned our medals and the soreness that follows after a race.  My sister and I attended our first meet-up at 2010 WDW Foodie Fest hosted by AJ (@DisneyFoodBlog).  We had so much fun meeting AJ and other tweeps.

Family and friends are two of the main reasons I love going to Disney World.  I no longer feel the need to defend my decision to go to the “Happiest Place on Earth.”  What makes me even more excited about taking trips there is to be able to share it with my nephew, who made his grand entrance into the world this November.  Yes, his auntie will be purchasing him an annual pass.

Plans for trips in 2012 with family and friends are already in the works.  I of course will write about how the plans are coming along and the trips themselves.  My love for Disney will never fade;  it only gets stronger with trips with family, friends, and meeting new people who also share the love of the magic and pixie dust.
