A Touch of Disney in Black History – Lanny Smoot

Lanny Smoot is a theatrical technology creator, inventor, scientist, researcher, and electrical engineer for over forty years. Mr. Smoot is currently a Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development Imagineer and Disney Research Fellow.  He received his 100th career patent in August 2011 from the US Patent and Trademark Office, which was a first for anyone at The Walt Disney Company.  As of today, he has 102 patents.  Over seventy of Mr. Smoot’s patents were from his research and inventions at Disney.

Mr. Smoot and his team have invented many technologies, interactive systems, and special effects, which Disney guests experience across Disney Parks, consumer products, and Disney Cruise Line. 
Mr. Smoot encourages students to engage in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) curriculum. He recently served as a judge for an Innovation Challenge for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) students, sponsored by Disney on the Yard.
