Disney Social Media Moms “On-the-Road” Celebration in Charlotte, NC

I have heard several wonderful things about the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration Conference held at Walt Disney World in the spring.  This year the conference was by invitation only compared to first come first serve for registration in the previous years.  I was not invited to the 2012 event, but did not expect to due to me being “fresh on the blogging block”.  When I read the tweets about the “On-the-Road” Celebration, I knew I wanted to attend.  The closest location to me was Charlotte, NC and the event was free.

I received an email invitation to attend, registered, and waited for a confirmation that I was able to secure a spot. An email came thanking me for registering and hoping I was excited (yes, I was). The event would be held at the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Charlotte-Southpark.  I have never been to Charlotte and wanted to arrive the day before the event to ensure I did not get lost.  I made reservations at the DoubleTree and was set.  The email I received contained the following agenda:

7:30 am Registration Open

8:00 am – 9:00 am Breakfast served

9:00 am – 9:15 am Opening Remarks: Maria Bailey

9:15 am – 10:00 am Keynote Speaker: Shannon Miller

10:00 am – 10:15 am Disney Showcase: Laura Spencer

10:15 am – 11:15 am Mompreneur Panel Discussion

11:15 am – 11:45 am Keynote Speaker: Tiffany Krumins

My journey began 9/13 after I saw three clients for my full-time job.  My trusty directions instructed me to travel up I-85 North.  The 3 ½ – 4 hour drive was not that bad.  I had my iPod to keep me  company, as well as, phone conversations with Sara (@DisneySara).  The hotel was easy to find and the room was clean.  I ate at one of the hotel’s restaurants and spent the rest of the evening in the room relaxing.

The next morning it was time for the “celebration”.  Registration consisted of picking up name badges, swag bags, and placing our business cards/names in a bag for giveaways throughout the event.

The Mistress of Ceremony was Maria Bailey, CEO of BSM Media and Host Mom Talk Radio.

Breakfast was served and delicious.

The first speaker was Shannon Miller, Olympic Gold Medalist, Wife, Mother, and Cancer Survivor.   Ms. Miller spoke about her fears of social media, helping at least one woman a day with being healthy, and loving what you do.  Her speech inspired me to be more aware of health and following my passion.

Laura Spencer, Social Media Manger, gave us information on what was new at Disney Parks and what was to come.  She got everyone excited about Cars Land (Disneyland) and New Fantasyland (Walt Disney World). She somehow got on the topic of corsets.  You had to be there.

There was a Mompremeur Panel Discussion that consisted of the following three women:

  • Marcelle Collins-Clyburn – Founder of the National Women’s Leadership Association
  • Katie Barnes Harding – Founder of South Charlotte Playgroup and blogger
  • Robyn Pellei – Founder and CEO of ViveVita

The last speaker was Tiffany Krumis, Inventor of AVA the Elephant, Wife, Mother, and Cancer Survivor.  You may have heard of her due to her appearance on Shark Tank.  Ms. Krumis talked about her inspiration for developing Ava the Elephant Medicine Dropper and her battle with cancer.  She dared us to conquer at least one fear and tweet her the results.

Giveaways during the event included t-shirts, bags and one laptop.  I won a t-shirt.

Even thought this was only a half day event, the information about taking your brand to the next level, networking,  and conquering challenges was motivational and inspiring.  I was truly honored to be in a room of wonderful, talented, and creative women and men.
